Thousands of Yemeni protesters gathered today in the capital, Sana’a, to demand that the President Ali Abdullah Saleh step down, echoing mass demonstrations in Tunisia and Egypt.
The protests took place near the Sana’a university campus. Saleh, a U.S. ally, became leader of North Yemen in 1978, and has ruled the Republic of Yemen since the north and south merged in 1990.
